E-Biking in Central Oregon

Maupin, Oregon is at the center of a number of superb biking trails and we are proud to be the first to offer E-Bike (electric-assist) tours based from Maupin.  The fabulous and fully paved Sherar’s Falls Scenic Bikeway is our featured ride. From the ROW Adventure Center located in Maupin, you can choose either a half or full day ride pedaling an electric-assist bike that allows friends and family of differing abilities to enjoy the fun of bike riding together. With over 300 days of sunshine each year and only 6” annual rainfall, this is ideal biking territory.

On the full-day ride we climb from Maupin to prairies of farm and grassland, with scenic vistas looking to Mt. Hood.  We ride along quiet roads with picturesque barns, grazing cattle and classic scenes of the American West.  Continuing on, we stop at White River Falls, one of Oregon's most beautiful cascades.  Our route descends to the Deschutes River and we stop at Sherar's Falls where we honor the Indigenous peoples of the area for whom this is an important and highly-respected fishing site. Using traditional fishing platforms and methods, members of the Warm Springs Tribe, and others, continue the fishing tradition as they have for thousands of years. From here we ride the near-level road along the Deschutes, where columns of basalt and slopes of sagebrush are the perfect desert backdrop.  On our half-day ride we go from Maupin directly to the Deschutes River and ride along the river to Sherar's Falls, then return along the same route, back to Maupin.

Itinerary

1-day Sherar's Falls Scenic Bikeway Ride

Oregon was the first (and so far, only) state in the U.S. to create a series of designated Scenic Bikeways.  This ride follows the Oregon Scenic Bikeway known as the Sherar’s Falls Scenic Bikeway, a 33-mile loop route on paved roads with about 1700’ of elevation gain and loss.  Lucky for you, the hills seem much flatter when riding one of our quality electric-assist bikes, or E-Bikes.

We stop several times during the ride to learn about the natural and cultural history of the area.  Climbing out of the Deschutes River Canyon from Maupin, we reach an expansive prairie of grass and farmland.  Grazing cattle, rustic fences and old barns dot the landscape. On clear days Mt. Hood sets a spectacular backdrop to this part of the ride.  After crossing the undulating prairie, we start to parallel the White River as it drops towards the Deschutes.

A highlight is a stop to view White River Falls, where water cascades over a stair-stepped falls some 90’.  We learn about the geology of the area while marveling at the falls’ beauty.  It’s the perfect place for our picnic lunch.

Leaving White River Falls State Park, our route continues downhill some 500’ through a rugged canyon of sagebrush, rock and scattered pines.  It’s easy going and all downhill until we arrive at our next interpretive stop, Sherar’s Falls.

Sherar’s Falls, the route’s namesake, is a dramatic chasm where the Deschutes River has carved a steep passage between rugged basalt lava flows.  For thousands of years Native Americans have fished here as migrating salmon leap out of the water to climb upstream.  Using dipnets and setnets while standing on wooden scaffolding, Indigenous peoples continue to fish here today and at certain times of year, when the salmon are moving upstream, we may see them perched out above the rushing river.

After marveling at the power of Sherar’s Falls, we cross a bridge to the other side of the Deschutes River and then follow a paved road that parallels its course on a gentle uphill grade on our return to Maupin. Steep slopes are covered with sage, rabbit brush and grasses.  We may see rafters splashing through the rapids, birds in the riparian zone and plenty of geology to spark conversation.  We arrive back at our starting point by later afternoon.

Sherar’s Falls Half-Day Ride

For those who want a shorter ride, we offer an easy out-and-back ride from our Maupin headquarters. We depart from our ROW Adventure Center and cross the Deschutes River on a graceful and historic bridge, then turn to follow the river’s course downstream.  The ride is level with great views of the river’s rapids and canyon scenery.  After 9 miles we reach Sherar's Falls and stop to ponder this natural wonder where Native Americans have fished for salmon and steelhead for thousands of years.  After learning about anadromous fish and the fishing tradition of local Tribes, we return to Maupin following the same route previously traveled, but with a completely new perspective. This is a superb introduction to riding an electric-assist bike!
