God's Pocket Resort Kayaking Tour, British Columbia

Comprising several islands and islets at the entrance to Queen Charlotte Strait, God’s Pocket Marine Provincial Park is renowned for its wildlife diversity. It was rated by Jacques Cousteau as the best cold water scuba diving destination in the world but is equally impressive above water for its stunning wilderness.

On this week-long kayaking tour, you’ll be immersed in the natural beauty of this spectacular region while enjoying all the creature comforts of God’s Pocket Resort. After thrilling days spent kayaking, hiking, and wildlife watching, you’ll be treated to gourmet dining and a comfortable bed to ensure a restful night’s sleep.

This lodge-based kayaking tour begins with a magnificent boat cruise from Port Hardy and your first glimpse of the forested islands of Queen Charlotte Strait. Nestled in a sheltered bay is God’s Pocket Resort, named after the sanctuary it once provided seafaring explorers navigating the stormy Pacific Ocean. Today, the lodge remains the only building within God’s Pocket Marine Provincial Park, with just seven rooms to create an exclusive stay.

Our God’s Pocket Resort Kayaking Tour is designed for paddlers of all abilities, with an introduction to the basics of sea kayaking provided on arrival. Days will be spent slowly paddling through the sheltered waterways surrounding the resort, accompanied by sightings of whales, sea otters and bald eagles.

In the evenings, you can refresh with a hot shower and feast on chef-prepared meals before memorable nights spent around the waterfront campfire. If you’re lucky, you may even get to witness the ocean’s glowing bioluminescence beneath a starry night sky.

Day 0

Arrive in Port Hardy + Explore the Town

Make your way to Port Hardy, a charming waterfront town that can be accessed by road from Victoria and Nanaimo or by flight from Vancouver International Airport to Port Hardy Airport. Settle in at an accommodation of your choice before heading out to explore the bustling fishing harbor and lively main street. If you’re a fan of seafood, make a beeline for one of the local restaurants to feast on salmon, tuna, or shellfish before an early night, ready for the adventures that await in the morning.

Day 1

Water Taxi to Hurst Island + Sea Kayaking Orientation + Excursion

Wake early for breakfast at your accommodation or a local cafe before meeting your guides at the Government Docks at 9:00 am. After a brief introduction and receiving your wetsuit booties, you’ll board a water taxi destined for Hurst Island, from where we’ll continue by boat to God’s Pocket Resort. During the 45-minute ride through the waters of Queen Charlotte Strait, you may be lucky enough to spot whales and other marine life playing nearby.

On arrival at God’s Pocket Resort, you will have time to settle into your room before an orientation meeting. This will be followed by a delicious lunch created by our talented chefs. After lunch, your guides will conduct a short introduction to kayaking session, including safety considerations to keep in mind before you launch. Take the opportunity to practice your paddling techniques in the nearby waters prior to your first excursion through Queen Charlotte Strait.

Shortly after returning to God’s Pocket Resort, hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served, followed by dinner. In the evening, settle in around the campfire to listen to your guides as they share their knowledge about the natural history of the region.

Day 2-5

Sea Kayaking + Whale Watching + Hiking + Relaxing

The next few days will be spent enjoying the surrounding wilderness, as well as the comforts and cuisine of God’s Pocket Resort. Begin each day with a hearty breakfast in the dining hall before heading out for a hike or a kayak. Around four or five hours will be spent paddling each day, with plenty of stops where you can rest and observe the marine life around you. You may have the opportunity to visit Browning Wall, which is particularly famed for its diversity of invertebrates.

With a gorgeous beach as your backdrop, lunch will consist of a gourmet picnic, complete with baked goods. After lunch, you can stretch your legs during a short walk through the surrounding rainforest and learn about the area’s ancient civilizations.

Some days on the water may be shorter to allow for longer hikes around the lodge, or you may head off for a nighttime paddle to observe the glowing bioluminescence. If you don’t feel like having an active day, you can opt to spend time at the lodge and kick back with a good book from the library. It is also well-stocked with board games, nature films, and ecology resources.

TIERED PRICING EXPLAINED: Our trips are budgeted for full or near full sign-ups which enables us to offer trips at the lowest possible price. Because of numerous fixed costs, it is more expensive to operate a trip for a small group. Therefore, on some of our trips, in order to avoid having to cancel a trip, we have a “tier-pricing” system to avoid canceling a trip with a low number of sign ups. We have found that most people also prefer this alternative to having a trip cancelled. Thus, you will note on our trip prices there may be different price for 6-9 people versus 10-12, etc.

ALL PRICES IN US DOLLARS. We will do our best to adhere to the itineraries and trip descriptions listed on our website. However, tour itineraries or sub contractors (such as taxi, cruise boats or hotels) may change slightly due to reasons beyond our control including but not limited to Acts of God, wind, waves, inclement weather or other. We always welcome you to call us to clarify any item - often this is the best way to fully clarify expectations - call us collect or on our toll-free number. You will be sent pre-trip email with latest details within a month of your tour - it is your responsibility to check in with us prior to your trip to see if you have all the information you need. We will always do our best to provide you with the best possible tour and to fully meet your expectations to the best of our ability.

We may initially invoice you at the higher tier price, and refund the difference depending on the final group size. Trip costs quoted are based on foreign exchange rates current at the time of this printing. We reserve the right to raise the trip fee if there are exceptional cost increases beyond our control.

Great Time Kayaking in British Columbia

We took the trip because we would have warm food, a dry place to sleep and great kayaking. We were not disappointed by any of our expectations. We had taken other kayak trips and this was one of the best. We were met at Port Hardy and taken out to God's Pocket. Each morning we could get up and do some stretches' on the dock and then off for a great breakfast. We had 2 guides that led us in our kayaks out and about. One morning there was a wolf at the end of our bay. One day we went to a lighthouse for a tour and orientation about upkeep of the lighthouse. The guides prepared lunch and then back at the resort the chef prepared a wonderful dinner after appetizers. After dinner we could attend a lecture or just relax. Great time and great people. Glad we took the trip.

Kayakers Paradise

Just returned from our God's Pocket tour. The area is a kayakers paradise with sea and land wildlife mixed with great scenery. The guides were great and the food was fabulous. We saw wolves, whales, otters, sea lions and a variety of birds. Also paddled out to a lighthouse and took a tour of it. Wonderful time.
