Enjoy rafting, mountain biking, and kayaking on a four day Idaho and Montana adventure sports bonanza—complete with luxury lodge accommodations.

ROW's Rocky Mountain adventure begins in Superior, Montana, an hour west of Missoula. You'll meet your guide and take off for a whitewater rafting day trip on the St. Joe, Blackfoot or Clark Fork river. At the end of the day on the river, we'll return to a local Bed and Breakfast for happy hour, hors d'oeuvres and a family-style dinner.

The next day we travel west to one of the most amazing bike trails in the nation, the Route of the Hiawatha. This 13-mile bike path follows the route of the old Milwaukee Railroad and passes through ten tunnels (one is 1.66 miles long) and over seven high, dramatic trestles that span mountain canyons. The trail slopes gently and no previous mountain biking experience is required. Your guide will prepare and serve a delicious picnic lunch along the way. Shuttle service back to the top is provided.

At the end of this scenic bike ride we'll drive over the Bitterroot Mountains to the River Dance Lodge where you'll spend the next couple of nights. Nestled on the banks of the Clearwater River, you can relax in the lodge's handcrafted log cabins and soak in your private hot tub.

The next day, we raft the roaring Lochsa River, the Lower Selway River or the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River, depending on the time of year, water levels and your adventure level. These rivers run free and clear through the thickly forested canyons of the 1.3 million acre Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.

The Lochsa is a raft-bashing class IV+ run that peaks in May and June, becoming a more technical run in July as the snow-fed river begins to drop. The Selway and Middle Fork Clearwater are gentle float trips with Class II-III whitewater. Both rivers are very scenic and suitable for rafters ages five and up.

After a day of liquid excitement you'll spend another night in your log cabin, enjoying your hot tub and view of the neighboring wilderness and Clearwater River.

The next day we'll take advantage of the skills you've learned so far by paddling a sit-on-top kayak on the Lower Selway or Middle Fork of the Clearwater. Crystal clear water sparkles in the sun and those who enjoy fishing might also want to cast a line. After another full day on the river, we'll return to the River Dance Lodge for a final dinner and overnight stay. Our multisport adventure trip ends on day five. Head home or extend your stay and take another whitewater rafting day trip or let ROW book a one-day horseback ride in the area for you.

If you need to purchase some gear before your whitewater rafting trip, ROW has assembled the more common items at our ROWear online store, hosted by New Headings.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Meet your ROW guide at a designated meeting point near Superior, Montana and then go rafting on either the St. Joe, Blackfoot or Clark Fork rivers, depending on which has the best whitewater. At the end of the day return to a local Bed and Breakfast and enjoy happy hour and hors d’oeuvres with your ROW guide. Then it’s a family style dinner at the inn, or at a local restaurant.

Day 2 - Travel west about half an hour to one of the most amazing mountain bike trails in the nation, the Route of the Hiawatha. The 15-mile ride crosses the rugged Bitterroot Mountains between Idaho and Montana along the route of the old Milwaukee Railroad. The gently sloping bike path passes through ten tunnels (one is 1.66 miles long) and over seven high and dramatic trestles that span mountain canyons. No expertise is required as the trail slopes gradually downhill the entire way. Your guide will prepare and serve a delicious picnic lunch along the way. At the end of this spectacular ride you’ll drive over the Bitterroot Mountains to ROW’s River Dance Lodge where you’ll stay in rustic luxury in a handcrafted log cabin with private hot tub.

Tonight’s dinner is at our own Syringa Café where you’ll dine in fine style along with your personal ROW guide who will host you for the next couple of days. After dinner enjoy a nearby stroll, or soak in your hot tub under the star-studded sky.

Day 3 - We raft the roaring Lochsa, the lower Selway or Middle Fork Clearwater, depending on the time of year, water levels and your desires. Adjacent to the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, these rivers run free and clear through thickly forested canyons. The Lochsa is a raft-bashing class IV+ run that is highest in May and June and a more technical run in July as the snow-fed flow begins to taper off. The Selway and Middle Fork Clearwater are gentle float trips with some class I-II whitewater that is suitable for rafters ages five and up but are also a great place to hone your paddling skills. After a day of liquid fun including lunch on the river, spend another night in your own log cabin, dine with your guide and enjoy your hot tub with a view over the Clearwater.

Day 4 - Today you take advantage of the skills you’ve learned thus far as you paddle a sit-on-top kayak on the lower Selway or Middle Fork Clearwater. Crystal clear water sparkles in the sun and those that enjoy fishing might also want to cast a line. Return to the River Dance Lodge for your final dinner and overnight.

Day 5 - After breakfast, you can head home or extend your stay and take a one-day horseback ride in the area.
