Who attends a ROW fly-fishing course?
People from all walks of life and all ages join us. We get a mix of couples, singles, families and friends, usually between 25 and 70 years of age. Some have never been fishing and others have extensive experience. Some are very active and some are not. Without exception everyone comes to have a good time and learn from the best in the business.
When is the best time to go?
This experience is excellent from early spring through the end of October. This peak season is when most of our guests choose to join us on the water. Weather will vary throughout the season.
What if I am a novice fisherman?
People of all skill levels will find our courses fun, educational and productive. Our expert fly fishing guides are patient instructors who enjoy the opportunity to teach beginners the finer points of fly fishing. You will leave this fishing course with the basic knowledge that is necessary to catch trout effectively.
How big are the fish we would catch?
Most of the rainbow trout that we catch on our trips will range from 12” to 18”.
What's the weather like?
You'll find a wide variety of weather during the season although, in general, days are warm and sunny. In May and June the weather is more variable and can range from sudden cold spells, rain and sunny blue skies, with temperatures from 40 to 80, all in the same day. The same is true in the fall. July and August do have the most consistently good weather with daytime temperatures reaching 100 degrees. However, a rainstorm can happen any time and it's important to bring a two-piece rain suit and follow our suggested packing list.
What is the typical group size?
Courses can accommodate from one to 20 guests. Larger groups can be accommodated with advanced notice.
I have a family with young children. Can they go?
Absolutely! Children as young as eight are welcome to take part in this course. It does help our courses run more smoothly if the young children have their own interest in fishing. Few activities offer the opportunity for uninterrupted, quality sharing as does a day of fishing.
I am a senior citizen. Can I go fishing?
Yes! People in their nineties have taken this course.
What should I wear on the river?
See our Packing Lists for each trip we run. Most people already own the items needed. Remember, it never hurts too bring a few extra clothing items in case of foul weather.
What does ROW provide?
Snacks, beverages and all fishing equipment are provided for this course. We also supply all necessary fishing equipment.
What special gear do I need to bring?
ROW provides all necessary fishing equipment for your day on the water. Guests may bring their own equipment if they choose.
Does ROW provide beverages?
It's important to drink plenty when you're outdoors, so ROW provides fresh drinking water and soda at all times. We also supply chips, granola bars and fruit.
Can I bring my camera or video camera?
Yes. Many of our guests enjoy having visual remembrances of their experience.
How do I make a reservation?
The easiest way to make a reservation is too just call our office and let us know which trip you'd like to join. Or, complete our online reservation request form. You may obtain immediate confirmation by using your credit card to charge the nonrefundable trip deposit, however, confirmation is not final until we also receive a copy of your completed trip application. Otherwise we'll send you an invoice and trip application form which you need to return along with a deposit within 7-10 days of your phone reservation. (Demand for space sometimes requires us to request payment in less time in order to hold your reservation) Credit cards are accepted for deposits only - the balance must be paid by check. While it is possible to join our trips on short notice, space is limited and we recommend you sign up well in advance.
I can't swim. Can I still take this course?
Yes! We do not put our guests in any situation where they will have to swim.
Are there bugs and snakes?
Mosquitoes can be a nuisance during this course. There are sometimes bees and flies and it's a good idea to bring some repellent. If you have a bee allergy be sure we know and bring your own medication. There are only gardener snakes, which pose no threat to human beings.
Do you have fishing trips that require camping or last multiple days?
Yes, we run many multi-day wilderness fly fishing adventures in Idaho. We operate trips on the Snake, Middle Fork of the Salmon, lower Salmon, Owyhee and Bruneau Rivers. We also have four and five day trips on the Grande Ronde in Oregon. We set up luxury style wilderness camps and delicious, gourmet food is served throughout your entire trip.
How fit should I be to take this course?
Physical fitness is of very little importance on these trips. Guests must be able to stay on their feet and perform simple casting techniques for two and half hours. |
