Coeur d’Alene River Fly Fishing

The Coeur d'Alene River flows through a variety of water types including pools, riffles and runs which allows an angler to use many different fly fishing techniques. ROW offers both float and walk-and-wade style fly fishing trips on the upper Coeur d'Alene, depending on seasonal regulations. The upper section, which includes Tee Pee and Independence creeks, offers superlative walk-and-wade fly fishing and you can expect to catch fish that are bigger than what you’d probably expect to find in these headwaters. There is a very healthy population of Cutthroat and Rainbow trout ranging from 6” to 21”.

Throughout the season, the Coeur d’Alene River provides a variety of different hatches. The spring is marked by its remarkable May Fly hatch. Terrestrials and stimulator patterns are a must have in the summer time. And September and October are well know for their consistent daily caddis hatch. When deciding between Stone Flies, May Flies, Caddis and Terrestrials, an angler will benefit from the experience of ROW's expert fly fishing guides. The giant golden stone flies provide some of the best dry fly fishing anywhere. Considering it's close proximity to town, the Coeur D'Alene River is a true North Idaho gem. The Coeur d'Alene is a fantastic river for half, full or multi-day fly fishing trips.

The tranquil setting of North Idaho's Coeur d'Alene River is an ideal fly fishing backdrop. ROW offers guided fly fishing float trips and walk-and-wade trips on this pristine river. This is a remote mountain jewel within easy striking distance of Coeur d'Alene town. Half day and full day fly fishing trips are available year round.

FAQ

When to Go:

We operate trips on the Coeur d’Alene River year round. Our peak season begins in early spring and runs through the month of November. This incredibly productive fishery produces high catch rates all season long, giving anglers consistent action. Each month on the Coeur d’Alene offers our guests new and exciting ways to approach wild trout.

What to Bring:

This list is based on years of experience! Some days in north Idaho are hot and sunny and you'll simply need a swimsuit or shorts, T-shirt and tennis shoes. However, if the forecast is for cool weather, you should try and bring a set of polypropylene underwear and a wool or nylon pile sweater. Our guides often find that polypro underwear with a pair of nylon shorts over the top is the perfect combination for cool days. If it gets even cooler, adding a nylon sweater is a smart idea. Precipitation can come at any time in our region, so be sure to pack raingear for your trip. Avoid all cotton materials as cotton makes you colder when wet!

For Warm Days:

  • Sun screen and sun hat
  • Nylon shorts or swimsuit
  • Camera and film
  • Tennis or athletic shoes
  • Headstrap for glasses
  • Personal water bottle - optional
  • Raingear

For Cool Days:

  • Polypropylene underwear is highly recommended
  • Wool sweater or synthetic pile top
  • Rain gear
  • See other items under "For Warm Days" too
