Each year ROW seeks to hire a motivated individual interested in sharing the wonders of nature with children and families in an outdoor adventure setting. The River Jester assists ROW's guide staff on all "Family Magic™" trips on the Salmon River Canyons each summer, trips designed for families with children ages five to 14. River Jesters join an experienced staff of fun-loving, thoughtful and talented outdoor professionals with a tremendous passion for the natural world. In addition to Swamper duties (see Swamper Job Description for more information), the Jester leads a range of activities and games for children and families while in camp, activities that are primarily oriented toward learning more about nature. Being a River Jester can be hard, physically demanding work. Yet it is also immensely rewarding. The River Jester spends the summer traveling on the cargo raft down beautiful whitewater-filled river canyons, interacting with people from all over the world and sharing the wonder of nature with children and families. Jester Duties:
- Ride on the cargo raft and assist cargo boatman in daily set-up and take down of on river camp and other camp logistics
- Work positively with other team members to implement other logistical aspects of ROW trips, including pack-up and clean-up in order to provide guests with a safe, meaningful and memorable experience
- Lead fun, engaging and educational activities focused on the natural world for children of varying ages and their families while in camp
- Engage and respond to guests in a positive, friendly and supportive manner, including meeting their expressed and unexpressed needs
- Take care of ROW equipment and facilities
- Professionally represent ROW and its Mission, Vision and Values
- Follow all policies and procedures as outlined in ROW's Guide Manual
- Act as a good steward of the natural world and follow Leave No Trace practices
Jester Qualifications:
- Legally allowed to work in the United States
- Minimum of 18 years of age
- Physically fit, able to work long hours in the field and lift and carry heavy objects over awkward terrain
- Solid communication skills with a young children and parent-age adults
- Willing and eager to interact positively with a range of age groups, from small children to seniors
- A positive, supportive team player
- Ability to follow ROW's drug-free and tobacco free workplace policy
- Experience with children in educational or summer camp-like settings preferred
- Academic or professional background in natural sciences, environmental studies or related field preferred
- First Aid and CPR training preferred
